Situated 2km from the B1 at the small village of Mkumbara, about 20km north of Mombo, this clearly signposted and pleasantly low-key resort (Ø 027 264 1539 or 0748 663205) has been converted from what used to be the staff accommodation of a neighbouring chipboard factory. Despite retaining a slightly institutional air, it stands as the best accommodation on the B1 between Same and Korogwe, and seems reasonably priced at US$15/19 single/double, US$7 per person for a dormitory bed, and US$4 per person to camp. The large well-wooded grounds sprawl attractively across the Usambara foothills, and attract a wide variety of birds, as well as monkeys. Facilities include a swimming pool, a tennis court and a restaurant/bar.
