This scruffy little town on the B1 between Same and Korogwe is the springboard for trips into the Western Usambara. It’s an unremarkable place: one traveller comments that ‘the best thing about Mombo is the delicious potato samosas you can buy from the street vendors’ and frankly even these can be almost inedible for grease! Fortunately, you’re unlikely to need to linger in Mombo. Any bus heading along the B1 can drop you at the main junction, from where a steady stream of minibuses runs up to Lushoto via Soni. If you do need to overnight, the Midway Inn and adjacent Sandali Inn both have reasonable doubles with net and fan for around US$3. The Midway Express Restaurant, next to the Midway Inn on the junction of the Lushoto road, serves acceptable meals for a similar price.
