Mafia Island Lodge. We really like this place and are surprised at the guidebooks’ sniffy reports on it. The reception area is magnificent with its high roof and always a cool breeze. I could spend days there. The dining area is lovely and we have twice seen the moon rising between the palm trees. The food is excellent especially the bread and cakes and Italian influence. We found the rooms excellent (all rooms are basically ‘box shaped’), beautifully decorated and spotless with lovely view from the balcony. The beach is lovely with beach bar and sunloungers and great swimming. The staff were very attentive. All in all a firm favourite and we hope to come back one day. As residents we paid $75 FB, which I thought was outstanding value. One needs to add Park fees at $20 per person per day which makes it more expensive but the snorkelling was one of the best we have ever experienced, similar to Maria la Gorda in Cuba and to the Solomon Islands. The sunset sail was very beautiful.
One unexpected bit was the short flight with Coastal from Dar to Mafia took two and half hours as we flew to Kilwa first to pick up 2 passengers before going to Mafia. At least we saw the great Rufiji delta.
